TIFAHR: time and frequency analysis of heart rate variability. Pitfalls and misinterpretations

The aim of this study was to develop an experimental setting and software to evaluate cardiac autonomic Function in unrestrained rats. Before application of the method it was thoroughly tested and compared to the existing literature. Results were obtained for freely moving rats with subcutaneously implanted ECG electrodes tunneled to a tail cuff. The analog ECG signal was amplified and A/D converted at 1000 Hz. After peak detection a time series of RR intervals was obtained. Programs for the analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) were implemented in a graphical language (LabVIEW). Statistical properties were determined in the time domain. Power spectral analysis was performed after cubic spline function curve fitting and resampling at 0.1 s intervals. Each epoch lasted 25.6 s and was Hanning windowed (256 points, 50% overlap and a frequency resolution of 0.039 Hz). Results were obtained on 5 unrestrained rats under basal conditions and after pharmacological interventions.
