Effects of Heat Treatment on Phase Transformation and Corrosion Resistance of Boride Layer on Austenitic Stainless Steel AISI 304

摘要
The austenitic stainless steel AISI 304 was thermochemically surface treated using a powder-packed boronizing process at a temperature of 950 A degrees C for about 4 hours. Double-phase boride layer (FeB and Fe2B) was detected and then investigated for the corrosion resistance compared with the untreated one. Heat treatment was performed at a temperature range of 800 to 900 A degrees C for 2 hours on the boronized austenitic stainless steel AISI 304 to diminish the double-phase boride layer. Afterward, corrosion tests were performed to clarify the effects of heat treatment as well as phase transformation on the corrosion resistance of the boronized austenitic stainless steel AISI 304. The results of this study showed that the formation of single-phase Fe2B layer offers the best corrosion resistance.
