Stress-induced rock damage; its measurement and application

The redistribution of in situ stress after excavation is related to the extent of brittle fracture damage that could adversely affect the stability of the excavation boundary. Therefore, it is a key concern to identify stress-induced rock damage in the stability analysis of underground openings. First of all, related studies were briefly reviewed. In addition, the main results obtained from the moment tensor analysis and the damage thresholds of rock under triaxial compression were summarized. An experimental damage model developed to simulate post-peak behaviors as well as nonlinear behaviors before peak strength was explained, and case studies where the model was applied to highly stressed conditions were also introduced.
