A new theatre for Spain:: the impossible Federico Garcia!Lorca

El publico and As[ que pasen cinco anos, two plays written by Lorca between 1929 and 1931, represent a true revolution for the middle-class minded and conformist Spanish theatre. Used to conventional plays that kept avoiding going against public opinion, the Spanish stage of that time could only be repelled by those two plays developing thethemes of homosexuality in their complete complexity while using avant-garde techniques. In such a context and with the setting up of Francoism that would prevent any expression of artistic heterodoxy, it was not surprising that this theatre has been impossible to produce till recently.
