Generalist teacher music preparation: A Brazilian investigation

This work is part of a research study that has been developed in the southern region of Brazil. The research investigates the musical preparation that it is offered in the Pedagogy courses that prepare teachers for the four initial grades of the fundamental teaching in primary school (ages 7 to 10 years). Thirty-eight interviews were undertaken with co-ordinators of Pedagogy courses and with music/arts lecturers that teach on such courses. Some analyses are introduced regarding the interviewees' answers inr elation to generalist and specialist music/arts teaching. In a general sense, the courses intend to prepare the generalist teacher to teach music, but the real preparation does not include an efficient programme in music education.
