Advancement in nondestructive investigation of liquid YAG at very high temperature by synchrotron radiation

Synchrotron radiation experiments have been performed on liquid YAG, yttrium aluminum garnet Y3Al5O12, (melting point : 1950 degrees C), as well as on solid YAG and YGG, yttrium gallium garnet Y3Ga5O12, to obtain structural information at high temperature. The development, construction and performance of a new cell for X-ray Absorption Spectrometry for in-situ high temperature analysis of solid and liquid materials in the presence of a CO2 laser radiation is described. The sample is heated up to the liquid phase by using a continuous wave laser associated with levitation by a gas jet. We have investigated short and long range order at the atomic scale by performing combined X-ray absorption and X-ray diffraction real time measurements.
