New findings concerning a double-pass amplifier of original design allowing for a significant increase in the peak power of laser pulses without changing the lasing mean power and pump power are presented. A peak power of 305 kW is demonstrated at a lasing mean power of about 25 W. The physics of such an amplifier and prospects for its application are discussed. (c) 2005 Pleiades Publishing, Inc.
