THEORETICAL-METHODOLOGICAL TRAJECTORY OF CULTURAL GEOGRAPHY

Cultural studies emerge in the geography of the western world in a context of systematization and structuring of this science as an academic discipline. According to the old and new paradigms created, the path of cultural geography goes through several transformations in the course of its history. Based on a bibliographical research, the present work intends to clarify this path, since its foundation until the beginning of the 21st century, highlighting its main authors, characteristics and transformations. First, a survey of studies was carried out that show the emergence of works on culture within geographic science and how they were maintained from the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. In a second moment, the proposal was to analyze the reformulations related to cultural geography that took place from the 1960s and 1970s. Finally, we sought to shed light on the emergence and contextualization of cultural geography within Brazilian geography. Through these analyses, a broad field of study can be perceived, which can be used by geographers in Brazil, in order to build new visions and highlight the different particularities existing in space. In addition, it is understood that research on the history of geographical thought is necessary to think about a geography that understands its own origins.
