Born of the need to create highly reliable telecommunications systems, for which the maximum allowable downtime typically amounts to just a few minutes per year, including the time required for upgrades, Erlang is a powerful programming language. In this issue's Toward Integration column, Vinoski returns to examine it deeper to show those who develop enterprise-integration or middleware applications that require high reliability how Erlang handles the difficult parts of concurrency, distribution, and reliability with relative ease. © 2007 IEEE.
