Mechanical and sensing performance of embedded in-fibre Bragg grating devices during impact testing of carbon fibre reinforced polymer composite

摘要
The vulnerability to impact damage of optic fibres embedded in carbon fibre composites has been evaluated. Fibres containing Bragg gratings have been embedded in cfrp laminates and their performance as high bandwidth strain sensors and their resistance to mechanical damage monitored throughout a number of instrumented impact tests. A fibre optic Fabry-Perot interferometer was used to process data from the Bragg gratings. Strain-time data from the gratings have been compared with data from a surface mounted resistive foil strain gauge, and also with load-time data from a force transducer mounted in the impactor. Recommendations are made on the location of optic fibre sensors for maximum sensitivity and survivability under high-energy impacts.
