Storage Compression in P2P based Video-on-Demand Systems

摘要
Video-on-Demand (VoD) services are attractive but also expensive even with the utilization of P2P networks. To achieve cost reduction, this paper proposes a storage compression strategy called STOCOM, which greatly magnifies the storage capacity of peer nodes by compressing large data chunks into small pieces while still maintaining their functionalities. STOCOM has been adopted by a large-scale P2P VoD system called Novasky with promising results. Leveraging real-world traces from Novasky, an in-depth analysis from a trace-driven simulator further reveals that, the storage efficiency achieved by STOCOM can outperform that of traditional replication based strategies by 45 - 53% under normal circumstances.
