The conditions for patenting inventions in the field of medical technology are discussed. The European Patent Convention (EPC) excludes methods for treatment of the human body by surgery or therapy and diagnostic methods practiced on the human body from patentability. However, an apparatus or a substance incorporating an invention in the medical field is, in principal, patentable.
