摘要
Although algae-based wastewater treatment has been claimed as a cost-effective and energy-efficient process compared to the traditional treatment technologies, there is a relatively slow adoption of algae-based wastewater treatment technologies. With the current focuses on zero carbon emission and circular economy, there is an exciting opportunity for algae-based wastewater treatment technologies. The Special Issue on 'Algae-based water treatment' presents the current status and some important innovations in the algae-based water treatment area. This editorial summarizes the key topics discussed in this Special Issue, including algae-based heavy metal removal, algae-based wastewater treatment, algae harvesting and bloom-forming cyanobacteria control. Furthermore, it presents the key knowledge gaps for the future research and guidance for future adoption of algae-based water treatment technologies.
