True Random Number Generator Using an Active Inductor Based Oscillator

摘要
Oscillator jitter is commonly used as a source of entropy in true random number generators (TRNG). Circuits based on this phenomenon are usually built with ring oscillators (ROs) mostly because of their simplicity and ease of testing (on a FPGA). In this paper we investigate the use of active inductor based oscillators (AI-OSC) in TRNG. Two designs are compared, in a 0.18 mu m technology provided by AMS, one with ROs and one with AI-OSC. It is shown that the latter has better statistical proprieties for the same power budget (450 mu W) and speed (40 Mbps).
