CORRELATIONS BETWEEN SOME ANTHROPOMETRIC PARAMETERS, THE LIPID PROFILE AND GLYCATED HEMOGLOBIN IN BULGARIAN MEN WITH TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS

摘要
The aim of this study is to investigate the correlations between the lipid profile indices, as well as glycated hemoglobin levels, and some anthropometric parameters of Bulgarian male patients with type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The study included 136 males with T2DM, divided into two age groups. Anthropometric parameters: waist (WC) and hip (HC) circumferences. Calculated indexes: Body mass index (BMI) and Waist-hip ratio (WHR). Laboratory indices: total cholesterol (TCH), triglycerides (TG), high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). In the present study we found eleven significant correlations between some anthropometric and laboratory parameters in Bulgarian male patients with T2DM. They were as follows: 1st age group 40-60 years: TCH/BMI, TCH/WC, TCH/WHR, HDL/BMI, HDL/WC, and LDL/HC; 2nd age group 61-80 years: TG/BMI, VLDL/BMI, HbA1c/BMI, HbA1c/WC, and HbA1c/HC. The levels of triglycerides and VLDL were significantly higher in the group of 40-60 year old men, than in the second male group. The study showed that the correlations of anthropometric parameters with lipid profile indices and the glycated hemoglobin values in different age and gender groups of T2DM patients could predict the prognosis or the susceptibility of persons to the risky complications of the disease. The multidisciplinary approach to T2DM requires together with anthropometric parameters, the patient's lipid profile and glycated hemoglobin levels also to be monitored.
