Why publish?

Higher Education institutions have placed an increasing emphasis on scholarship in recent times as publishing and the pressure to publish is felt strongly by South African academics. In this article I discuss some of the critiques levelled against an emphasis on publishing, provide a rationale as to why academics should publish, and reflect on why South Africa is not producing many young academics who actively publish. The article aims to open up a conversation about a pertinent issue confronting all South African academics.
