INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL SUPPORT, SELF-EFFICACY, AND PERSONALITY ON THE GENERAL HEALTH OF RETIREES IN LAGOS, NIGERIA

The influence of social-support, self-efficacy, and personality on the general-health of retirees in Lagos, Nigeria was investigated. Retirees (N = 475) attending a monthly pensioners' program participated. A MANOVA revealed significant influence of social-support on two dimensions of general-health status: social dysfunction (F(1) = 12.009) p = <.05) and depression (F(1) = 13.119, p = <.05). Self-efficacy significantly influenced somatic symptoms (F(1) = 60.943, p = <.05) and depression, (F(1) = 53.255, p = <.05). Personality influenced the four dimensions of general-health status. The need for improved self-efficacy, social-support, and stability of personality among retirees was suggested.
