Product market competition and corporate governance: Complementary or substitute?

摘要
The current relationship between market competition (or corporate governance) and firm performance are not conclusive. We think perhaps this is not because market competition and corporate governance don't work, but because these researches ignore the mutual influence between market competition and enterprise institution. Through our research, we find that moderate concentrated ownership and product market competition on productivity are complementary, so are relative disperse ownership and competition. We also notice the substitute impact between board governance and competition. Finally, we find CEO duality is substitute for competition. These conclusions deepen our understanding about the impact of market and corporate governance on firm performance.
