摘要：
This paper presents a perspective on sustainable development from the viewpoint of the mining industry, and describes mining industry initiatives designed to reach a shared understanding of the role of mining and the minerals industry. Sustainable development and technology are inextricably linked, and the paper comments on the necessary interaction between technology development and various stakeholders in moving towards a more sustainable society. The role of coal in the world economy is described in terms of the three dimensions of sustainability. The use of technology development to improve environmental performance is illustrated through examples of initiatives to improve coal's use in electricity generation and iron making.
