An improved synchronization scheme based on sliding correlator and phase-locked loop (ILL) is presented and analyzed for impulse-based ultra-wideband (UWB). First of all, properties of Gaussian group pulses are explored as rationales for the presented synchronization scheme. Working principles of the synchronization scheme are given, where there are phase and frequency synchronization steps performing coarse and fine pulse position adjustment, respectively. Moreover, discussions on block parameter tuning are provided. MATLAB simulation shows that synchronization can be achieved within 15 clock cycles when 88% of the maximum auto-correlation for Gaussian pulse adopted is used as a criterion. Furthermore, tradeoffs on selecting the order of Gaussian pulses for communication are discussed according to difficulty of circuit implementation and superiority in system performance.
