Applying Location Based Services for Reducing Mobile Power Consumption

摘要
Smartphones are becoming the mostly used information processing devices of the public on a daily basis. Thus, the demand on their consumed power is excessively increased. Alongside, and since around 2000, Location Based Services (LBS) have rapidly emerged and developed as important added features to smartphones, allowing users to know and use their current location for various purposes. The motivation behind this paper is to use the LBS concept for reducing the consumed smartphone power due to Wi-Fi modules. The paper investigates the foundations of LBS, and proposes a mobile application that has been developed to increase the energy efficiency of smartphones by reducing the power consumption of Wi-Fi components using GSM cells ID information. The operation of the proposed app confirmed the achievement of its goal, and showed that up to 25% of the overall smartphone power consumption could be saved using the concept of LBS.
