We present an overview of the electromagnetic calorimeter of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment, which will run at the future Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The calorimeter contains 76832 lead-tungstate crystals (PbWO4). We describe the main properties of the crystals, the calorimeter mechanical layout, the photodetectors and their associated readout electronics and we report briefly on the calibration and monitoring of the detector.
