Addiction treatment and psychotherapy -: Do we need a philosophy of addiction treatment?

Do we share a common understanding in the treatment of addiction that guides our actions and helps us, independent of our professions, institutions and divergent interests, to offer in a common effort those treatments and support to substance dependent people, which they need and which are most adequate for them? And what is the role of psychotherapy? This issue is addressed on the background of various developments in society and in the field of addiction and by pointing out various fundamental problems and dilemmas that call for an answer. Taking psychotherapy in the treatment of addiction as an example it becomes clear that we need a common philosophy to combine evidence and pragmatism as well as neurobiology and learning theory, be it theoretically or for our daily psychotherapeutic practice.
