Self-determined motivation in amateur handball

The purpose of this study was to analyze the motivation in handball players based on the theoretical constructs of achievement goals and self-determination. The sample consisted of 316 young players, aged between 15 and 18. The instruments used to collect information were the Castilian versions of The Perception of Success Questionnaire (POSQ) and the Sports Motivation Scale (SMS). The data were statistically analyzed using descriptive analysis, correlation and regression. The main results show a clear positive relationship between ego orientation and extrinsic motivation and amotivation. It is shown that extrinsic motivation external regulation positively predict ego orientation and the reduction of task orientation in the handball players.
