摘要
The ever increasing demand for bandwidth leads to increased channel count and data rates in WDM systems. 10Gbs (OC-192) is now a standard data rate in many fibre networks. This bandwidth demand is linked to a change in traffic patterns. The dominance of data traffic means that the proportion of traffic across continents is growing. Thus there is a need for high capacity ultra-long haul links. The cost of these links are dominated by regeneration costs. There is a clear need to eliminate or at least postpone regeneration for as long distance as possible whilst retaining the high total capacity. Long links of several thousand kilometres without regeneration are thus they key technology for the internet age.
