The Next Generation Space Telescope is designed to study the most distant objects in the universe, the first stars and galaxies that were born after the Big Bang. As a logical successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, it will stress deep imaging and multi-object spectroscopy in the near and thermal infrared portions of the spectrum. Results from the Hubble Deep Field show that galaxy formation was vigorous at redshifts between 1 and 5 and that galaxies looked different at that epoch. NGST is designed to observe the details of galaxy genesis and buildup out to redshifts of 10. It will be sensitive enough to see back to the time before galaxies were born.
