Evangelical Reactions to the 1848 Revolution in Germany

At a time of growing interest in the relationship between religion and politics this essay focuses on the responses of a number of high-profile evangelicals to the revolutionary events of 1848. Most of the figures discussed here were key actors in the Revival and were all linked with the pandenominational Evangelical Alliance, established in London in 1846. The views and attitudes of German Lutherans and Reformed pastors as well as Irish and British Free Church clergy are considered in a comparative manner, revealing significant regional and theological differences of opinion and approach.
