摘要
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Emotional intelligence (EI) and codependency (CD) are concepts which affect nurses' personal well-being and the care provided by them. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between emotional well-being and academic performance in nursingMATERIALS and METHODS: This study was of a longitudinal, descriptive design on nursing students in Turkey. The participants were a cohort of 138 student nurses who had commenced their training in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ankara University. RESULTS: It was found that average EI scores decreased over the 4-year study program and average CD scores increased throughout the nursing education. It was also observed that there was a relationship between EI and CD; and also there was a relationship between EI and academic grades. These findings revealed areas for improvement in the current nursing education in order for the student nurses to become more healthy and effective nurses.CONCLUSION: Nursing education programs should be reviewed and new strategies should be planned for the well-being of the students. For beneficial patient outcomes, the EI and the CD of the students should be determined and improved and outcomes of nursing education should be measured.
