Study of the Resonant Frequencies of an Electrically Small Broadside-coupled Split-ring Resonator Antenna

The resonant frequencies of a broadside-coupled split-ring resonator (BC-SRR) printed on an FR-4 substrate are studied by eigenmode analysis to realize an electrically small multi-band BC-SRR antenna. It is shown that not only the resonant frequency of the first (lowest) mode but also those of higher-order modes can be controlled by connecting conductive patterns to the ends of a BC-SRR. A BC-SRR resonating in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands for wireless LAN was designed. At the first resonant frequency of 2.45 GHz, the outer dimension of the designed BC-SRR is as small as 0.029 lambda(0) x 0.025 lambda(0), where lambda(0) is the wavelength.
