Calcium hexaluminate (CA(6))/(magnesium aluminium spinel-alumina (MA-A)) functional gradient materials were prepared from industrial alpha-Al2O3 and MgO by liquid infiltration, using a saturated solution of calcium acetate as infiltration solution. The XRD, SEM and EDS results show that the phase of CA(6) increases gradually from the top to the infiltration interface of the sample. The grains of Al2O3 present spherical-like particle whose surface is smooth and the size is about 5 mu m. And the grains of MgAl2O4 distribute on the surface and in the clearance of Al2O3 grains. CA(6) with plate-like morphology staggered distributed in the matrix of MgAl2O4 and Al2O3, which is beneficial to improving the mechanical properties of (CA(6)) / (MA-A).
