Statistical simulation of high-altitude aerodynamic problems

摘要
The paper presents a multi-purpose computational system SMILE based on statistical methods of computational rarefied gas dynamics and aimed at the study of different aerodynamic problems in regimes from free molecular through transitional to continuum. The results of application of SMILE to investigation of flows about X38 model geometry, reentry capsule Soyuz, and space station Mir are presented. An engineering approach based on local bridging is also used to calculate aerodynamic characteristics of Soyuz and Mir in free molecular and transitional regimes.
