The stellar content of obscured Galactic Giant HII regions

We present results of a survey of obscured Galactic Giant HII regions (GHII). Near infrared images and spectroscopy are used to identify and classify massive stars in these emergent star forming systems. Our sample has been chosen from the most luminous GHII regions in the Galaxy as indicated by radio determinations of the Lyman continuum output. Our current data have identified massive O type stars, Wolf Rayet stars, and young stellar objects at the core of a number of these very young, massive star forming regions. This large sample of GHII regions will be used to characterize and understand the massive star forming process and will be useful in building models of external, aggregate systems. The sample will also be useful as a comparison to the three known Galactic Center massive star clusters.
