Diagnosis and classification of renal cell carcinoma

This article describes the results of the First International Workshop on Renal Cell Carcinoma held by the World Health Organization. At this meeting, special emphasis was placed on current and future methods for diagnosis, staging, grading, and prediction of patient outcome. This article also includes a synopsis of the revised recommendations for handling nephrectomy specimens in patients with cancer as proposed by the Cancer Committee of the College of American Pathologists.
