摘要
For physicians and patients alike, managing the symptoms of rheumatoid and osteoarthritis is an ongoing challenge. Myriad therapies are available, although virtually all provide only temporary relief and produce side effects that interrupt longterm use. New disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, biologic response modifiers, and cyclooxygenase inhibitors offer the promise of more effective, longer lasting symptom management and, in some cases, reduced side effects. The population of older persons affected by arthritis continues to grow. Increased familiarity with these new treatments will aid primary care physicians in helping older patients better manage their arthritis during the next decade.
