The influence of dehulling and seed storage on the germination of the range grasses of the Caldenal (Argentina)

The dormancy and germination of a group of range grasses from the Caldenal region of Argentina were investigated. The species were Pappophorum subbulbosum, Digitaria californica, Trichloris crinita, Stipa clarazii, Stipa tenuis. Sorghastrum pellitum, Piptochaetium napostaense, Poa ligularis and Setaria leiantha. The objective was to evaluate not only the germination characteristics of the propagules (caryopses plus lemma and palea) but also if the application of gibberellic acid, potassium nitrate and storage-time could modify the germination percentage. The elimination of lemma and palea or treatments with gibberellic acid or potassium nitrate increased the germination percentage of the propagules of the various species, except in the case of Digitaria californica, Trichloris crinita and Poa ligularis in which the germination percentage was similar to that of viability. In general, a decrease in the germination percentage related to storage-time was observed. However, Stipa tenuis and Sorghastrum pellitum increased their germination percentage after one year of storage.
