摘要
The shared epitope (SE) hypothesis is discussed in relation to susceptibility to rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and to the development of more severe manifestations of the disease. Review of the these issues reveals a complex association between the SE and RA severity that is highly influenced by ethnic background, clinical factors, and the particular SE allele inherited. Determination of the precise relationship between the SE and RA severity may have important implications for future patient care and research.
