A 5-year experience with levonorgestrel releasing intrauterine system in menorrhagia therapy in Latvia

In 2006, LNG IUS was included in the list of reimbursable medicines with the diagnosis N92.0 according to ICD-10, in Latvia. The Aim of the Study: to evaluate the effectiveness of LNG IUS in menorrhagia therapy in Latvia. There has been evaluated information concerning the patients who had undergone inpatient or outpatient manipulations with the diagnosis N92.0 from 01.01.2006 to 31.12.2010. Results: Each year 97% of the LNG IUS are inserted to women in late reproductive age, and about 70% of the cases refer to women over the age of 40. As regards patients under the age of 40, the cases of endometrial hyperplasia are rare among them. Conclusions: The key group of patients that have had LNG IUS inserted for menorrhagia therapy are women over the age of 30. Since LNG IUS has been included in the list of reimbursable drugs the number of uterine curettage procedures has declined by 60%.
