Control-Oriented Model of a Turbocharged Engine Airpath with Discrete-Time Considerations

Model-based control is a systematic way to manage the tradeoff between fuel efficiency and torque responsiveness in a turbocharged engine. This paper describes the development of a discrete-time model of a turbocharged engine airpath for future use in a discrete-time, model-based controller. First, a control-oriented 4-state model is developed in continuous time, but suffers from chattering after discretization. To fix this problem, a fast mode is eliminated by representing the throttle pressure ratio as a static map. This results in a 3state model that is easily discretized for use in a discrete-time, model-based controller.
