Dynamics of thin-layered colloidal crystals from single layer to multi layers; Crossover behavior from 2D to 3D

We report an analysis of the mean-square-displacement of single particle motions in single-layered, multi-layered, and 3-dimensional (3D) colloidal crystals by digital video microscopy. The essential feature of the time evolution of the mean-square-displacement for thin-layered colloidal crystals is the logarithmic divergence in the large delay-time region. With an increase in the number of layers, such divergence diminishes and the long delay-time behavior gradually approaches the convergence seen for a 3D crystal. Theoretical calculations based on an over-damped bead-spring lattice model are in good agreement with the experimental results.
