Complete Dipole Response in 208Pb

The complete electric dipole (E1) strength distribution in Pb-208 has been accurately determined by high-resolution proton inelastic scattering measurement at very forward angles. Multipole components in the differential cross section data have been decomposed by two independent methods: spin transfer analysis and multipole decomposition analysis. The results of the two analysis agreed well to each other. The E1 strength distribution has been determined including the neutron threshold region, where a strength concentration, called low-lying dipole resonance or pygmy dipole resonance, is observed. The extracted E1 strengths agree well with previous studies by nuclear resonance fluorescence and (gamma, xn). The electric dipole polarizability has been precisely determined as 20.1(6) fm(3)e(-2). The obtained value together with measurements on neutron skin thickness will make a strong constraint on nuclear model calculations especially for isovector property of the nuclear equation of state.
