Neves etal identify MANF as an evolutionarily conserved factor in Drosophila and mice that stimulates alternative activation of innate immune cells to facilitate tissue repair following retinal damage, delays congenital forms of retinal degeneration, and promotes engraftment of transplanted retinal cells, improving visual function.
