摘要
This article considers the ways in which Elizabeth Bishop employs the love poem throughout her career as a means of both accepting and postponing thoughts of death. In the process, Bishop is revealed to be a much more joyful and sensual poet than has previously been acknowledged. The article also looks at the role Bishop's Brazilian lover, Lota de Macedo Soares, played in the development of her aesthetic in the 1950s.
