Thermal shock damage in a two-dimensional SiC/SiC composite reinforced with woven SiC fibers

The development of microdamage has been observed in a composite consisting of SiC replaced with plain-weave SiC fiber fabric. The experimental results have demonstrated an increase of the critical temperature for onset of crack initiation compared with monolithic SiC. The observed microdamage processes of the composite are: (i) microcracks initiated front the corners of pores; (ii) crack growth between bunnies and inside the bundles at the transverse plane; and (iii) saturation of the crack density and formation of long cracks after three repeated thermal shock events.
