Translated from Metallovedenie i Termicheskaya Obrabotka Metallov, No. 7, pp. 28 - 32, July, 2012. The microstructure of a cast high-speed steel alloyed with niobium and not subjected to hot deformation is studied. Heat treatment of the niobium-bearing steel yields fine edged monocarbides, which makes the steel very tough. The introduction of niobium prevents formation of eutectic interdendrite carbides that cause embrittlement of the cast steel.
