Education and training of microelectronic engineers: Why and how?

In this paper an undergraduate training program for engineers with practical microelectronic experience is presented. The emphasis in this program is on the design of devices and integrated circuits, and the reason for this is expounded. A discussion of the incentives for producing such engineers for the South African context is also furnished.
