Style, Communication and Expression: A Comparative Analysis of Ernst Gombrich and Richard Wollheim Theories

This research proposes a relation between the theories from the Austrian art historian Ernst Gombrich (1909-2001) and the English philosopher Richard Wollheim (1923-2003). Despite they focused on different ways about how to conceive the image and analyze representation, we propose that after understanding their main differences, we can link both approaches from three central concepts: style, expression and communication. According to that, we show how this theories are not opposites but-taking required precaution-they can even become complementary and strengthen mutually.
