The celebrated bell tower in Pisa would be a world treasure even without its lean, which had been growing progressively worse until engineers determined how to stop it. The preservation of the tower involved slowly and carefully removing small amounts of soil from precise locations beneath the tower's foundation, an operation that required constant communication between engineer and contractor.
