The Hungarian veterinary vaccine production is 100 years old

The author gives a retrospective overview about the vaccine production in Hungary on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Phylaxia Serum Producing Corporation. Preceding it, vaccines have also been produced from 1891 at the Hungarian Royal Bacteriology Institute and at Hungaria Serum Factory. Due to the huge losses caused by swine fever, the serum production against swine fever started at Phylaxia with the direction of HUTYRA FERENC and KOVES JANOS. The author presents institutional changes and changes in ownership, and overview by species the most important vaccines produced there (pig, cattle, sheep, rabbit, poultry). Those persons are mentioned who had imperishable merits in the research, technological development and vaccine control. He states that the domestic vaccine production had significant role in achieving the results of Hungarian animal breeding.
