An evaluation of a college preparatory and readiness program for deaf students

Many deaf and hard of hearing high school students are not adequately prepared for postsecondary education which, in turn, impedes their success in the work world. To address this need, the League for the Hard of Hearing conducts a four-week summer College Preparatory and Readiness Program. The purpose of this evaluation was to determine whether the program improves students' mathematics and English standardized test scores. Two studies are reported, one of sessions conducted between 1990 and 1996, the other of a session conducted in 1997. Results show that the program is very successful and that the achievement level of deaf and hard of hearing students can be markedly improved using a specialized and intensive summer program.
