This article describes the current state of the art in the accreditation of chemical laboratories, both in Europe and world-wide, emphasising the most common discussion topics. The results of recent proficiency testing in chemical laboratories are summarised to draw conclusions on the performance of: accredited laboratories. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V.
